The History of Talkaround
TalkAround was Ireland's first independent stereo tape magazine when founded by Stuart Lawler in September, 1995. Stuart, then a 21 year old music student from Kildare, was to be the editor of the magazine for the next four years. From that very first tape, TalkAround's mission statement has always been to provide programming "produced by visually impaired people, for visually impaired people".
The TalkAround studio For the first two years of its life, TalkAround was a bi-monthly publication before starting its monthly service in August 1997. At this time, there were over 100 subscribers from all parts of the republic of Ireland, as well as from the North and the UK.
In September 1997, the tape magazine was officially launched through the ASK project in Co. Kildare. In the time period from September 1997 to September 1999, TalkAround increased its listener base and stood out in a league of its own as a quality audio publication.
Due to work commitments in 1999, Stuart Lawler departed from the Magazine and handed over to Jerry Lynch from Cork. In January 2000, TalkAround moved to its new home at the disability support office in University College Cork. This was a fitting place for the magazine to base itself as both Stuart and Jerry had connections with the college.

In September 2003, Emma Tracey revived the magazine and the first issue in over two years was circulated to an audience of over 50 people. This figure has now grown to almost 150. Emma continues, with her team, to create a quality audio production every month. Recent funding from the HEA (Higher Education Authority), has ensured that TalkAround can now develop its facilities, thus enabling us to improve on our quality and content.
